Linda Martin
Brockport CSD Teacher/Coach - Section V Executive Committee

Linda Martin is a retired teacher/coach/Student Assistant Program Coordinator at Brockport Central School District where she served with distinction.   As a young physical education professional, Linda became involved in Section V early in her career serving as the Section V Girls Basketball Chair 1973-1975, the New York State Volleyball Chair 1974-1975 and the Section V Executive Committee and Women’s Council President 1975-1977.  Her coaching resume is no less impressive having received the NYS Coaches Association Award in 1979.  In 1981, she became the NFHS Volleyball Coach of the Year; and six years later in 1987, she was recognized as the Teacher of the Year at Brockport CSD.  Linda had an impressive coaching career at Brockport as evidenced by her team winning Section V Volleyball Championships in 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1983, 1984, and 1985.  Had there been New York State championships at that time, her teams might well have advanced in those competitions.

As her career evolved, Linda was asked to leave the classroom to become the Chairperson of the Brockport Student Assistance Program where she provided valuable leadership in helping to direct the District’s efforts to assist young people with many of their challenges in the area of chemical use and abuse.  In recognition of this leadership, she was named the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Dependency “Helen Guthrie Youth Advocate of the Year” in 1991.  Linda was also a founding member of “Operation Offense”, Section V’s Chemical Use & Abuse education program.

During the 70’s and 80’s, Kodak was a very strong supporter of collegiate women’s basketball.  A friend of Section V, Hunter Low, was the person in charge of Kodak’s huge underwriting.  Only Linda could convince Hunter to underwrite a coaching clinic for Section V volleyball coaches with a highly recognized collegiate volleyball coach.  Linda was always looking for ways to improve every coach’s techniques.

Linda is a quiet but strong leader.  To this day she remains humble without the noise and flash – just getting the job done.  Linda was in leadership when girls’ sports were in quiet turmoil.  Change occurred during her leadership: quietly. With her strong conviction, girls’ sports have now evolved to what we experience today.

Linda was president of the governing organization for girls’ high school sports (1972-1974), which was called “Women’s Athletic Council,” separate from the men’s organization but far from equal.

At the end of the third year of her presidency, Linda was the first woman to become a member of the Section V Executive Committee. Almost single-handedly, Linda convinced every woman in the council that this joining together would be the best for girls’ high school sports.  Linda’s personality paved the way for the men on the council to also accept the new concept.

Linda Martin is the consummate professional who has made stellar contributions in every aspect of her professional life including Section V.
