Bev Hooper
Monroe BOCES Teacher/Field Hockey - Section V & State Coordinator
Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire and unite people in a way that little else does. When Bev moved to NY from Texas, she used the power of sport to adjust to the climate and school system. She participated in soccer, volleyball, basketball and softball through intramurals and play days while at Fairport High School. After graduating in 1973, she attended Drury University in Springfield Missouri where she participated on the women’s tennis team. She graduated in 1977 with a BA in Elementary Education and Physical Education. She retired from education at Monroe 1 BOCES after 36 years of service. During that time, she coached young students with developmental disabilities in athletic opportunities in Special Olympics and the Games for the Physically Challenged. She also spent 21 years coaching various sports at East Rochester High School. She received her MS in Adaptive Physical Education and CAS in Educational Administration from SUNY Brockport.
Bev arrived at East Rochester High School in 1977, shortly after Title IX passed, coaching girls volleyball and JV basketball. As the girl’s teams developed over the next two decades at East Rochester, she became the proverbial workhorse coaching field hockey, volleyball, basketball and softball. When she would walk down the halls teachers would stop her asking for a pass as they couldn’t tell whether she was the student or the coach until they noticed how serious she was because all coaches worried a lot. It was this trait, incidentally, which was best remembered by one of her former players who said “Coach Hooper’s seriousness and dedication inspired us to always try and perform to the best of our abilities. If people bought stock in Coach Hooper years ago, they’d be rich today.” During her tenure at East Rochester High School, she complied a record of 143-67 in volleyball with 3 Section V titles, 2 Section V runner up, and 1 Regional title. She earned a record of 259-90-58 in field hockey with 5 Monroe County League titles, 6 Section V titles, 5 Regional Titles and 1 State Title, and was a 2 time Section V runner up in Softball.
Among her accomplishments and service to Section V and the NYSPHSAA, Bev received the first Red Raider award in softball from Fairport High School, (1973). She was the chairperson for the Monroe County Field Hockey League, and a representative from Section V to the NYS Field Hockey Committee until 2002. She became the NYS Field Hockey Coordinator in 2000 until present. She co-coached the Western Scholastic Empire State Field Hockey Team from 1987-1994. She has been a certified high school sports official since 2000 when she started officiating field hockey in NY. She was so respected in girls field hockey that she was selected to serve on the rules committee for girl’s field hockey for the National Federation for High School (2016-2020). She was recognized as the Democrat & Chronicle Field Hockey Coach of the Year (1988) and Rochester Sportswoman of the Year Finalist (1989). She was the first female coach inducted into the East Rochester Athletic Wall of Fame (2000).
Bev enjoys playing golf, working around the house, and officiating high school field hockey games. She continues to work with NYSPHSAA and the sport of field hockey.
