Peter (Pete) Shambo, CMAA
Penfield CSD AD/Section V Past President
Pete Shambo, CMAA is a big picture person who organizes and implemented programs with fine detail. When he heard of an issue, he immediately began to organize himself and others to address the core problems. An example in Section V is when we identified a need to recruit more officials about 10 years ago, Pete decided to sponsor an “Officials Recruitment” night at Penfield. It was extremely successful. There were experienced officials from 10 different sports taking sign- ups and answering questions, and over 70 perspective candidates attended. Pete continued his involvement in working with officials by being the Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference’s officials’ coordinator.
Nationally in Section 1 of the NIAAA, Pete, along with a friend, took the reigns of the Section 1 Summer Institute for professional studies. Since then, he has organized the Section 1 State leadership people to make this professional development program arguably the finest summer professional leadership opportunity, not only for the AD’s in New York State and Section 1, but across the nation and beyond; as noted by several international AD’s in attendance in the last five years.
Pete is a Past President of Section V. While in the position of President he helped organize: the DASA education program for coaches; the seasonal sport specific student-athlete scholarship initiative and scholarship initiatives for active ADs to continue their education in NIAAA ‘Leadership Training Classes”. Additionally, he was instrumental in negotiating an officials’ contract that didn’t have mileage as a variable. Pete was also the Section V girls lacrosse chair for 7 years.
As a NYSAAA Past President, Pete continues to mentor new AD’s and to recommend to those ready, to seek leadership positions within their league, section or state organizations. Just recently, Pete retired as our NYSAAA Professional Development committee chair. In this position Pete oversaw and provided leadership for our Leadership Training Institute and Certification committee chair people.
Mr. Shambo has been an active member on many of our professional organizations: past League Executive Board member, Past Chapter 5 (of the NYSAAA) representative to the NYSAAA Representative Board and is a Past Chapter President. Pete was instrumental in organizing our local Chapter’s Professional Development Day and has been the ‘go to’ person for eligibility and problem solving suggestions.
Nationally, Pete is the current chairperson of the Certification Committee and a project reader. Additionally, Pete is a regular attendee at the National Conference and has been a NYSAAA representative to the NIAAA Delegate Assembly several years. Pete is also a CAA Test administrator. Pete was the
first person in our area of NYS to achieve his Certified Master of Athletic Administration and one of the first in NYS as well.
In March 2016 Mr. Shambo was awarded the “NIAAA State Award of Merit” and in December 2016 he was recognized at the NIAAA National Conference in Nashville with the NIAAA “Distinguished Service Award” for all his professional efforts and just this past March 2022 Pete was inducted into the New York State Athletic Administrators Association’s Hall of Fame.
Pete Shambo has been married to Gail for 36 years and they have 2 adult children: Morgan & Garrett.
