Hall of Fame
Denny graduated from the Arcade CSD in 1963 and SUNY Cortland in 1967 (BSE). He received both his CAS and SDA from SUNY Brockport in 1976 and 1980 respectively. He spent his entire professional life in the West Irondequoit CSD from 1967 through his retirement in 2006. He coached many sports including boys’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls volleyball, cross country and boys and girls track. He became the director of physical education in 1983 and director of physical education and athletics in 1984 and remained in that position until his retirement in 2006. He had been the assistant director of athletics from 1975 – 1984.
Denny joined Operation Offense in 1988 and has continued as the Executive Director of this Nationally recognized Section V Student Athlete Centered Chemical Health, Wellness and Leadership program until now. He joined the Section V Executive Committee in 1997 and went on to be president 2000-2002 and created the www.sectionv.org web site in 1998. He has also been the president of: Chapter 5 of the NYSAAA (1989-91 - 1st two year president), NYS Athletic Administrators Association (1996-97) and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (2005). Denny was a member of the NIAAA Publications committee (1996-2005) and authored a number of articles on improving AD office management and computer utilization. He also served as chairperson of the Finance section of the NIAAA’s 3rd Strategic Plan (2009) and served as the vice-chairperson of the NIAAA Hall of Fame committee (2008-2014). Denny co-chaired and co-developed the Section 1 of the NIAAA Leadership Training Summer Institute (2004-2014). Along with Lloyd Mott and the NYSPHSAA, Denny and the NYSAAA played an integral part in the development of the NYS Concussion Management team in 2006, which went on to develop a turnkey training program for concussion management throughout NYS and which eventually became a template for return to play and return to school concussion protocol across the nation. Denny continues to be very involved in the development of the Unified Basketball program in Section V.
After retiring from West Irondequoit, Denny took AD interim positions in Hilton (spring 2007), Churchville-Chili (2011-12) and the Wayne CSD (Fall 2014). While at Churchville he completed his 40th full year in education. Denny has always been a strong advocate for student athlete leadership training and helped developed many such workshops through Operation Offense. He has been on the Monroe County Public School Athletic Conference Executive Committee for over 30 years and is currently their Executive Director (2006-present). Denny continues as NYSAAA’s liaison to the NIAAA (2009-present).
Denny has been inducted into the NYSAAA (2014), Section V Football (2015), SUNY Cortland C-Club (2015) and NIAAA Halls of Fame (2015). Other honors he has received include: NYSAHPERD COA Physical Education Director of the Year (1998), Ellis H. Chaplin COA Award (2007), Rochester Sports Legends/Frontier Field Walk of Fame (2017), SUNYAC Cross-Country Hall of Honor (1965), NFHS Citation (2003), NIAAA Distinguished Service Award (2006) and the NIAAA Award of Merit (2012 - the Highest Recognition given by the NIAAA). In the spring of 2006, Chapter 5 of the NYSAAA named their annual Awards luncheon in his honor. Denny was also recognized with the “Community Champion Award” by Catholic Charities Community Services (2017).
Denny has been married to Kathy for 49 years and they have 4 adult married children and 11 grandchildren.
