Sandy grew up in Newfield, NY (home to the cover bridge), and is the oldest of ten children. She graduated from Newfield HS, Class of 1963; SUNY Brockport –1967; and received her MS at SUNY Cortland – 1972.
After Brockport she taught for 3 years in Hudson Falls, NY teaching elementary physical education for 2 years, and then moving up to the high school. She had to leave there to get her masters. After leaving Hudson Falls Sandy went to Jasper, NY where she worked from 1971 to 2002, 31 years. She taught K-12 physical education and high school health. She was actually hired to coach cheerleading!! Sandy started the girls’ interscholastic program and coached varsity soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track and eventually switched to softball. At the time of the merger with Troupsburg, she taught elementary physical education and health.
Sandy coached a Jasper soccer team that lost in the Class D finals on penetration time (the other team, Troupsburg), and went on to coach the first girls’ basketball team to make sectionals. Eventually she left coaching and became an official for soccer, basketball, and track.
Sandy was on a committee that established the Steuben County Girl’s athletic council as well as a committee that created the Allegany Steuben Association for Girl’s and Women’s Officials.
Sandy was so respected in girls soccer that she was selected to be on a committee that wrote the rules for girls soccer for the National Association for Girl’s and Women’s Sports. She also helped write the procedures/techniques for officiating girls’ soccer for the National Association for Girl’s and Women’s Sports. Sandy served as the southern tier representative to the Section V Girls Athletic Council as well as on the Section V girls’ basketball and soccer committees. After over 25 years of service she retired from both committees in 2008.
Among her accomplishments and service to Section V and the NYSPHSAA, Sandy co-chaired Section V girls volleyball, was the first President of the NYS Girls Soccer Association of Officials and was the representative from Section V to the NYS Girls Soccer Committee. Sandy served on the Section V Executive committee for 20 years in various positions including: member At-Large and the Vice-President for Girls Sport. She was also the Executive Committee liaison to 5 sport committees: girls’ soccer, cheerleading, softball, modified sports and basketball.
In1994 Sandy was appointed Athletic Director at Jasper-Troupsburg C.S.D. and held that position until I retired in 2002.
Sandy has been recognized as follows: 1993 Maureen Wright Award – Soccer; 1995 Referee of the Year Award; 2002 Steuben County Appreciation Award; 2009 New York State Athletic Administrators Appreciation Award; 2009 Steuben County Skillman/Beilby Presidential Award and in 2009 with a Section V Appreciation Award.
Now in her retirement Sandy enjoys traveling and camping, tow behind camper, backpacking the NYS High Peaks. She also enjoys reading and cooking/baking and is a Buffalo Bills and Syracuse University Basketball and Football fan.
